All my father's family piled into a Model T and drove to California looking for work back then. The Depression turned that part of the country into something resembling some of the poorer parts of a third world country. They all settled in the San Fernando Valley.

My Grandfather used to drive back and forth between Romayor and Beaumont to work at the shipyard there during WWII.
Between that, trapping/fishing, raising worms, forest fire fighting and various other odd jobs they survived. My family once fit your illustration perfectly. The "poor folk" stories I could tell...
