I remember my father and his siblings talking about living in East Texas during the Depression in the early Thirties. The stories always went something like: "We were hungry and poor, no food to eat, no electricity, no running water, dirt floor, six pairs of shoes between nine kids, and nothing but rags to wear." Then, with a perfectly straight face and without a hint of sarcasm, someone would say "And then the Depression came."
