To a large degree, they, and the media, are still living in a pre-internet three major network world, where there was a signinficant lag time between an allegation and the truth. In those days (i.e. "Worst economy in 50 years"), the false allegation became the truth in the minds of many. Now, with widespread access to the Web, and with cable channels such as FOX News, these types of allegations are countered nearly immediately.
