"So likewise, a passionate attachment of one Nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite Nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest, in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification."
"It leads also to concessions to the favorite Nation of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the Nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained; and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld."
"And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation."
Oh that's right, we have so many muslim democracies that are friends. It is the muslim countries that put us and the world at risk.
Ain't it the truth? Articles from Salon, The Forward, (Liberal) quotes by Saul Alinsky (Hillary's buddy) linked to on thread after thread...damn. This is a CONSERVATIVE forum, Mr. Lied. Please pass that info around to the Salon gang.
Have fun.
Lot's of tin-foil stuff has been entertained on this forum: fantastic tales of a 700,000 Chinese PLA "Afrika Corps" in the Sudan, ready to pounce on the Suez Canal; reports that La Cupacabra was genetically engineered in a ChiCom lab; stories about a "Red Heiffer" that will purify the faithful and allow them to reconstruct the Temple Mount --- hey, wait a minute, the last one was reported in National Review, although Justin Raimondo's story was far superior. Is NR "conservative" enough for you?
No kidding. That happens on the internet though. And this 'spy art student' story is for sure in the black helicopter top-ten.
I will, but I'll keep reading.

36 The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is, in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connexion as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop.
37 Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.
38 Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people, under an efficient government, the period is not far off, when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause the neutrality, we may at any time resolve upon, to be scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.
39 Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation? Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor, or caprice?
40 It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean, as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them.
..
Clearly there are Americans who deny weve formed an engagement to be fulfilled with Israel, others would gladly patronize infidelity. But many Americans, and not just Jews, recognize a commonality and engagement with Israel.
Id also suggest to you that were over a century beyond a detached and distant situation invites and enables us to defy material injury from external annoyance. And that Islamic terrorism is clearly a common threat to many nations, not essentially foreign to our concerns
Its a different world with different threats. Washington would have recognized the reality of Pearl Harbor and 9/11. It's been a long time since America could defend herself without standing on foreign ground.
That many people involved, one of them would want attention. They seemed to have disappeared.
Your story is a DU story.
It comes from Salon!
Why the "hostility"? Because it is simply a smear with no verification at all of even the basics.
And people who are either very stupid and gullible or have issues with Jews and Israel are the only people who would find it of interest.
I definitely do get the impression you have issues.
I don't understand anti-semitism.
I know. I didn't think it was any big deal when this first broke. Figured both governments wanted, because of 9/11, for it to go away. The reaction of the Israel first crowd is what has been amazing (scroll above to see the deleted replies).
I do think we have to make it clear to all countries that while we know they spy, no one has carte blanche to do whatever they want in our country. Israel does tend to be arrogant. They boast and smirk about how powerful AIPAC is. They figure charges of "antisemitism" is a weapon which will shut everyone up.
It actually has the opposite effect.
It's an urban legend.
I don't know much about Ha'aretz, but remember them running similar nonsensical articles that feed the conspiracy theories.
WOW! I have never seen so many deleted comments on a thread. Freepmail me with the comments.

3/15/02It is rather strange that the US media, with one notable exception, seems to be ignoring what may well prove to be the most explosive story since the 11 September attacks - the alleged break-up of a major Israeli espionage operation in the United States which aimed to infiltrate both the justice and defence departments and which may also have been tracking Al-Qaeda terrorists before the aircraft hijackings took place...

A Jewish newspaper and Jane's Intelligence Review. Not exactly the tin-foil hat crowd.
Seriously, I'm more curious about what operations the Arabs were (and are) running over here. They seem to be the bigger danger...at least to anybody who's been dealing with reality.
Actually, Fox News broke the original story - and we know what a den of anti-semitism resides there.
Fox quickly purged all evidence of the story. Those interested can read the transcript here.
