This article lays its emphasis on the philosophical rather than the biblical relationship between the founding of the U.S. and that of Israel. IMHO that is a very well-based comparison that will take you a long way. But I also believe it to be no accident that both the nations were founded by "people of the book." In other words, culture matters. A lot.

On Rush's show I have been hearing a creepy zionist ad calling for GWB to support an "eternal" bible-based Israeli claim to "all the land west of the Jordan." That claim would run all the way to Euphates River . . . and I hope the advertisers do not expect to sell that.

The Euphrates is east of the Jordan, although G_d did promise Abraham everything to the Euphrates.
