Student Told To Support Gay Rights Or Get An 'F'

KIRTLAND, Ohio -- What if a class assignment forced you to choose between getting a passing grade or following your moral values?

Lakeland Community College

A class at Lakeland Community College was told to wear a pink triangle for the day to symbolize gay pride.

NewsChannel5's Kareen Wynter reported that one student decided to fight it, but it almost cost him the school year.

Many students dream of graduating school with high honors, but this student said that he has little to look forward to in his final weeks.

"It's a moral issue I have," he said. "I pay tuition to come to this school. I shouldn't have to defend my moral issues."

A class project in criminal justice turned sour for the college senior, who we'll call Ian.

The assignment was to wear a pink triangle around school for the day as a symbol of gay rights and then write about the experience. Ian confronted his teacher.

"I asked 'What if a student were to feel uncomfortable with this -- would there be an alternate assignment?'" he said. "She said no."

He, in turn, got an F and faced expulsion.

So why wasn't the student offered a backup assignment? Lakeland administrators said that it is part of classroom policy.

"I think if the situation were easy, it wouldn't have been part of the curriculum," said Barbara Grano of Lakeland.

Still, faculty members said that they didn't break the rules.

"Absolutely, this student had an option," she said.

When NewsChannel5 spoke with Ian later in the day, his teacher had given him an apology note that read, in part, that the requirement was waived.

Ian said that he doesn't think things would have been resolved had NewsChannel5 not gotten involved.

"I appreciate everything you've done," he said.

His mother was happy, too.

"I was thrilled," she said. "Here's a young man who stood up for himself, and it worked."

Professors at Lakeland said that there's a list of things you can and can't challenge in the school's handbook.

Thank you so much for finding this gem.
I certainky plan to make good use of it here in the Sacramento area of California, where under the guise of History students are being subjected to compulsory indoctrination in Islam.

This boy is bright enough to know the apology was, most likely, not sincere. IMO, the teacher was instructed to apologize so as to avoid the school getting bad press. The teacher needs to get some sensitivity training.

How much education do you have, anyway?

Speaking for myself, enough to be able to make a distinction between education and indoctrination.
And certainly enough to know a personal agenda when I see one.

I am waiting for mention of the "heterosexual" pride assignment this teacher has employed.

Maybe they should have an alternative class where Arab students are told to wear the Star of David around all day.

That teacher would have had a stroke if the student wore anything remotely conservative, Republican, pro-life, etc. It is great to see my tax dollars once again being put to fine use. (/sarcasm)

Just affirms the fact that when I have kids go off to college, I am going to push like hell for them to go to a conservative private college (or at least a school that allows expression of BOTH sides, not just the Marxist line).

Supposing the assignment had been a clumsily disguised compulsory endorsement of other pathologies?

Exactly!

The teacher here is wrong. There should have been, at least, an alternative assignment available.

That certainly made me think...
For instance, at a very liberal college, wearing an "I CHOOSE LIFE" sign might have exposed the students to physical harm from the infanticide crowd.

The kid could have gotten a better idea for project report if he had walked around all day with a symbol of a white hood and KKK on it,

Actually I believe the appropriate punishment would be for the teacher to wear the KKK hoods and walk around a black community college all day or risk losing her job. Now that would be justice.

What is wrong with making college students THINK?

Forcing students to undergo silly humilating rituals has nothing to do with thinking. It is a despotic abuse of power and training people to be obedient slaves to the Brave New World Order.

You're quite welcome. If you'd like, I can freep mail you a copy of the entire letter. That way you can print it off and give them to the school. You'll need 3 copies. (for yourself, the school principal, and the school system's superintendent)

I'm convinced that the Hatch Letter is a powerful tool for parents. Not enough people know about it OR use it.

You should consider another vocation.

English? Your post don't resemble anything close to Shakespheare! Much less the words in the King James Bible. True English lessons yours are not.

Fire the teacher. This is nothing but hazing. There is no educational value in this, only the sick impulse of a petty tyrant to abuse his position.

"I don't see this assignment as being much different from a home economics class..."

Apparently Tinkerbelle, you wouldn't mind the next gym class "assignment" of bending way over for the soap for that "experince"...

Thus is the arrogance of the "enlightened" liberal Left.

"Why did he not just lie and say he wore it, and make up an "experience... "?

So now your saying he shouldn't stand for his values and morels, just be a liar and a cheat.

"...Half the people I knew in college made up their "research" assignments"

That explains why so many college "graduates" are soooo stupid.

God help us all

"I probably would have worn one but defaced it somehow. A swastika would do nicely in this instance."

Then you'd be telling everyone that your a nazi faggot. That'd be taking goose-stepping to a new height.
