The key to the research is the behavior of receptor type molecules they put in the lipid bilayer. Surfactant self-organizing bilayers, monolayers, micelles, etc. are old hat (as AndrewC implied above).

Exactly. Any research performed at weapons labs is primarily in relation to weapons, even if that research may be applied to civilian use.
