No, hadn't heard of it. Interesting. But I'm sorry, I disagree on one small point. I think "encouraging grocery stores to include checkout lanes exclusively for the elderly" is a bit much. They're the one group that actually has the time to shop. Some go shopping practically every day as a way to get out and socialize. And they're supposed to get a speed lane ahead of the rest of us who still have to work for a living? That's a bit much.

I think the reason for the senior-exclusive lane is much like the handicap spaces. Many elderly people cannot stand for long, and some are there on time limits either from bus, cab or neighbor transportation. Perhaps the line should be for elderly and handicapped, and when it's not taking care of them, open to others. Or perhaps next time when we are in line and see someone who looks as though he or she could use a small courtesy, we could just trade places with them.
We used to show our elders more respect, even those we didn't know personally. There's no reason why we shouldn't still do so, even in so small a way.

Actually, I'm cool with that. Giving them their own lane(s) frees up other lanes where I have a lesser chance of getting behind those who spend five minutes writing checks for their purchases.
No disrespect intended for our seasoned citizens. :)
