State-sponsored racism at its best.
To: Twodees
This system is unfair to all.Truly qualified blacks are permanently suspect.
Truly qualified whites are knocked off the economic ladder associated with the "better" schools.
The American people get a dangerous corps of poorly qualified "professionals".

This
would make a great web site. Choose the university you would like to attend , enter your GPA, SAT, race, sex, age and see the probablity (based on historical data) that you would be accepted. See what the answer would have been if you were a different sex. Different race. Different age.
Probably GPA & SAT differences wouldn't matter a lot.

Yeah it would be nice to see it expanded. As it is though it is quite the eye-opener. Did you play with the numbers some?

After working in medicine in several years, I would recommend that no one ever go to a physician so graduate from Howard University. They have probably been quotaed through their entire career. I totally agree.
IMO, this is the most blatent form of racism towards blacks that is possible.

THE SHOCKING GAMEGreat Article--terrible title. The only thing that would shock me (or anyone else who has been paying attention) would be if candidates with identical qualifications were admitted irrespective of the melanin content of their skin.

I think this is bogus. My daughter just graduated from UVa. We are white out-of-staters. I've sort of adopted the school because it's so much better than my own alma mater (which has a pretty good reputation of its own). I've been sitting in on classes there now for four years, and I have a pretty good idea of the sort of kids they accept.
I tried 800,800,90 and they only give someone with that record a 60% shot of getting in. Someone with 800,800,90 would have to have something real disqualifying not to get into UVa.

of some who might otherwise pass on by....

I think this is bogus. I think maybe you should check out the CEOUSA.ORG website more thoroughly before you level that kind of assertion.

i agree; i'd like to see the sophistication of the algorithm. on the other hand, maybe it picked up 800/800 at 90th percentile graduating gpa as a slacker??? the discrimination at the med school level (state and some private) is much more blatant. this harms the minorities who do have the skills (who are readily evident to their classmates and are out there in larger numbers than ceo.org would lead you to believe). time to end the quota nonsense.
To: ml/nj
Oh and BTW, at the
ceousa website they also have "calculators" for NC State
and Univ. of Michigan, (Ann Arbor campus I believe)
Check 'em out.

Actually the first time I went to CEOUSA was to look at one of their studies on Law School Quotas (Virginia). If you go to the site I think you will find that they get into what you mention above quite a bit.

thanks for posting this. regardless of ones persuasion on these issues, a good airing of what is truly happening is the best course: let the people see and make their own decisions rather than be led by social engineers of any stripe.

It doesn't change my mind. Their hearts may be in the right place, but their little form is flawed.

What do you think would happen if a school, public or private, pulled this kind of racism in favor of white students? Can you honestly tell me the state would have nothing to say about it?
My other post was in error. The state isn't sponsoring this, they're just conveniently looking the other way.
