The Navy wanted to cashier the dope, but Old Joe pulled strings and had JFK hailed as a hero.
It was a good thing JFK acted responsibly after the Japs cut his boat in half or even Joe could not have saved his reputation.

Radio man away from his radio, on the bridge yapping with Mr. Kennedy. In the movie they depect the Packard gas engins as quirky. In truth he had only one of his three engins running. Weather conditions, light winds, little to no waves, scattered clouds, star light and one 300 foot Japonese Distroyers making near 30 knots that was seen by the other two PT boats which hailed 109. The boat was sunk, and the men killed, because the OIC was criminally derilict. The kennedys, boats, cars airplanes. The only place they are safe is in a bar.
