BP says it will switch to ethanol this year; others are expected to follow. California's largest gasoline supplier announced Thursday it will phase out the gasoline additive MTBE and switch to ethanol by the year's end, a move that may trigger other major producers to follow suit.

MTBE has an objectionable odor. Ethanol on the other hand smells just like Ted Kennedy's breath.

The real problem is humans can taste MTBE at the parts per million level. Not that it migrates any faster, just that those will wells nearby notice.

State environmental officials say neither MTBE nor ethanol has proved to be a significant smog-fighter. This is a true statement. So it is a moot point about pollution being worse if MTBE isn't used in the gas. Nothing to worry about in your area except for the water supply.
