Tow truck driver shot, attacker killed, freeway snarled [Marine Base, California]

CAMP PENDLETON – A man shot and wounded a tow truck driver then fled onto a military base, where he was killed by law enforcement officers Wednesday.

The confrontation along the edge of Camp Pendleton caused morning traffic to back up for nearly four miles on southbound lanes of Interstate 5, the only freeway in the coastal area 35 miles north of San Diego.

The unidentified gunman shot a freeway service patrol driver about 7:30 a.m. The reason for the shooting was not known, California Highway Patrol spokesman Larry Landeros said.

The suspect then walked away making "hand gestures to motorists on the I-5," Landeros said. He crossed onto the Camp Pendleton Marine base, where he was confronted by law enforcement officers and fatally shot, Landeros said.

"He became uncooperative, so they shot him," he said.

Military police, CHP officers and San Diego County Sheriff's deputies were involved in the confrontation, Landeros said.

The tow truck driver, who is part of a patrol that offers free assistance to stranded motorists, was airlifted to a San Diego hospital where he was listed in critical condition and was undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds to the stomach and buttocks, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

"What kind of "hand gestures"? Did he give them the finger? Did he just shrug? Or was he directing traffic?"

It doesn't really matter. He wasn't shot for the hand gestures.

Pray that the poor tow truck driver recovers!

This is great! "He became "He became uncooperative, so they shot him," he said.

How many billions of $ would have been saved if Rodney King had received this for his being "uncooperative"!

So was this now worm food an illegal alien, a gang banger or whacked out on drugs?

Or al Fuqra or a Jihadist in America. Every cop I know has this fear of stopping a vehicle and walking up and getting blasted by one of these Islamic creeps. I should have thrown that in the mix.

We are starting to see more illegal aliens flee from an accident that they caused or are involved in. Some get really violent when apprehended.

Why not use a Chinook, a junkyard magnet, and a very long cable?

There are a whole lot of trees, utility poles and lines where I live. Then I don't to be on the road have a rusted out old van loaded with 40 illegal aliens break loose from the magnet due to rust and fall on my head.

However, who knows, in a few years, your method might become a cost effective and safe way to handle this problem.

Then, we can open up "SHEIK YERBOUTY'S & GRAMPA DAVE'S CHINOOK PICKUP SERVICE, for police, sheriffs and CHP's.

Actually, I think I'd file that under MISTAKE #2. MISTAKE #1 is the file for shooting the tow truck driver in the first place -- especially when the reports say the shooter was a stranded motorist and the tow truck driver was part of patrol service which HELPS stranded motorists.

good on 'em, I say...

Me to, amigo. My nephew was recently one of them boys you describe so well. LC, bad ass. Him and his Marine buddies are the best group of young men one could ever meet. They were at Pendleton, I used to take him back to base once in awhile. He's a college boy now, 24 and has his whole life ahead of him. The Corps did him good.

Might be a love thing.

Maybe the gunman thougth that the freeway service patrol driver (tow truck driver) was going out with his girlfriend, or that the tow truck driver looks like someone going out with his girlfriend.

If you are an MP, you are giving them a bad name because you really have a good sense of humor. I have enjoyed your posts for a long time.

With all of the serious auto accidents when cops have to chase the bad guys after Rodney King and the personal injuries that cops suffer in wrecks and just arresting these bad guys, there could be a real market in the bigger city areas.

Supposedly some company is working on a device that will scramble the on board computers in these get away cars. That forces them to a stop. Then we can come and pick them up with our copter and magnet. Then take them to the police station where a swat team and several K9 units are waiting for some fresh meat!

The electronic pulse. It'll stop newer cars but not diesels.

He crossed onto the Camp Pendleton Marine base, where he was confronted by law enforcement officers and fatally shot, Landeros said. "He became uncooperative, so they shot him," he said.

NOTE TO SELF: After shooting tow-truck driver for no apparent reason and flipping the bird to fellow motorists, do not--I repeat--DO NOT evade law enforcement officers by wandering onto a MARINE BASE brandishing a firearm.
