Frat Members Charged With Pig Abuse

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –– Members of a Wake Forest University fraternity were charged with animal cruelty and abandonment after a drunk, dehydrated and sunburned pig was found unconscious in a park.

Wake Forest spokesman Kevin Cox said the university's dean of students is investigating and could impose fines or suspensions against the fraternity.

The 23 members of Sigma Phi Epsilon could be sentenced to 90 days in jail if convicted on a misdemeanor such as animal cruelty.

County officials said the fraternity members rented a picnic shelter at Tanglewood Park for a party thrown April 20 by newly initiated members in honor of more senior fraternity members.

Animal-control officers were called the next morning after the nearly 200-pound pig was found in the woods by a couple walking their dog. The pig was missing its tail and was unable to stand. Park officials said the animal was drunk.

"It reeked of alcohol," said Barbara Cassidy, the director of Forsyth County Animal Control. "That pig could have easily died. I don't understand how someone could think it would be fun to abuse an animal like that."

The dehydrated hog had patches on its skin where it was burned while being exposed to heat lamps used as props at the party, Cassidy said.

Animal control officers took the ailing animal to the county animal shelter, where it is recuperating.

However, pulling its tail off and otherwise physicaly abusing it is simply cruel. I don't understand how people get pleasure out of inflicting pain on living creatures.

Here, here!

I would like to add that I find it shameful that a bunch of fratBOYS in North Carolina, my home state and the hog capital of the world, don't know that pigs are sensitive to the sun and liable to get sunburnt and they also dehydrate very easily. What a bunch of dumbass fratBOYS!

Heh-Heh...you weren't a DU by any chance? We had pig parties too. We had a lot of Wellesley girls there (Hitlary's alma mater).

What makes it worse is that it is a southern college!
I can understand a bunch of yankees screwing it up, but this is inexcusable.

PL, it's too late in the day for me to rise to that bait!

,,, there's a few things about America this foreigner has always had trouble understanding. Socialising with a pig to this extent is one of them but I'll work thru that as I can.

Of longer consternation to me is the concept of frat houses, in particular, where names like kappa delta phi or similar come from and what makes one frat house perceivably better than another.

Any assistance advancing my understanding is appreciated.

I don't know what to tell you -- other than the fact that those frat boys are lucky that the pig is no longer the U.S. Attorney General....

The Origin of Fraternities

The American college fraternity system is as old as the United States itself, for it was in 1776 that the first secret Greek-letter society came into existence. It was the custom then for students at William and Mary, the second oldest college in America, to gather in the Apollo Room of the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia, to discuss the affairs of the day. On the night of December 5, 1776, five close companions stayed after the others had left and... (Click here to continue)

I didn't join a fraternity when I was in college, but knew many who did. Some were organized around academic interests (the "engineering" faternity, the "agriculture" fraternity). Some were organized more along social lines: the "jock" fraternity (athletes and their groupies), the "Jewish" fraternity, the "Black" fraternity, etc. etc. Many fraternities, however, didn't seem to have any such evident organizing theme, other than being an alternative to living in the school dorms without actually being in your own apartment.

We started our own Fraternity at college. Kappa Renta Frienda..... It was organized around the principle of '$3 at the door get's you a plastic cup and access to the taps'.

And if anyone brought a pig, it was $6.

Don't forget, George W. Bush, his Daddy, and Ronald Reagan were all frat boys.
