Why is it that when I connect with software like BearShare and WinMX, ny modem goes frantic, even though nothing's being uploaded/downloaded? I always get paranoid and turn it off.

Thank you! Just as I finished posting my message it occurred to me that I hadn't searched for anything from just a command prompt. Knowing Windows, and its tendency to hide things from the user, I should have thought of that sooner. I have WindowsXP, which I'm sure has the same setup as Windows2000--or worse!
I'll go check for that right now...thanks for the tip!

Download the Ad-Aware
RefUpdate 1.3 reference file updater (found on download.com) also, so Ad-Aware knows about the latest spyware to neutralize it.
You might also want to try Bugnosis, a brower add-on tool that lets you know about potential spyware links in web sites you visit. It is very reveiling of which sites watch you more than you are watching them.
