All: Welcome to Smart Growth. Basically it is communist central planning with an enviro twist. They draw a line around all the cities in the state, and allow little or no development outside the 'growth boundaries'. They take 50% or more of the land outside the boundaries and convert it to conservation areas or 'green spaces' and the rest for 'sustainable farming.' The only people allowed to live in rural areas are farmers, and they are completely controlled by the govt.
Those inside the 'growth boundary' are in for even a greater treat. Yes, the Sierra Club wants 500 families per acre, but guaranteed you won't own your own house. In Portland Oregon, the national test tube for Smart Growth, if you have a vacant lot, or your house burns down, you can't (re)build a house on it. You've got to build a minimum of a 6 unit apt. complex.
They are also deliberately letting their streets go and not fixing them while pumping money into public transportation. In 25 years, Oregon wants to eliminate cars alltogether. I would assume that private property ownership is on the list for abolishment too at some point.
Eventually, they want to force 95% of the population into the main cities. Of course, freezing development drives up housing prices, limits jobs, and creates a 'good old boy' network of businesses that don't have to compete. That limited environment obviously will mean more people than resources, leaving our beloved govt to 'distribute' those resources as it sees fit: jobs, goods, housing, transportation, you name it (communism anyone?).
Sounds surreal, but it's happening in Oregon right now. Here are some links with articles on the topic. Take the time to read it. The enviros are pushing it at every level of govt across the nation with some very slick marketing tactics. They are also sneaking it in under people's noses before they even know what's going on. That's how they have done it in Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Next to anti-gunners, this is the biggest threat out there IMO. Anyone who cares about property rights should get up to speed on this as fast as they can.
