Shock poll lifts lid on racist Scots

JASON ALLARDYCE POLITICAL EDITOR

LARGE numbers of Scots hold racist views which could lead to a rise in the fortunes of far-right politicians north of the Border, a disturbing new opinion poll reveals.

Almost half of all Scots would back moves to return immigrants to their country of origin, according to the exclusive Scotland on Sunday/Scottish Opinion poll.

The survey - conducted in the wake of National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen’s success in the French presidential race - also reveals that only 46% of Scots believe immigrants make a positive contribution to society.

The poll found that a majority of Scots - 58% - believe it is too easy for immigrants to enter the UK and only four out of 10 do not think there are too many immigrants in Scotland.

The findings of the poll shatter the myth that racism is not endemic in multicultural Scotland.

They also sparked grave warnings last night from one of Scotland’s leading anti-racism campaigners that the British National Party, tipped to win seats in England’s local elections this week, could soon capture Scottish parliament or council seats.

Rowena Arshad, the director of Scotland’s Centre for Racial Equality, said she was "shocked" by the findings.

She said: "I am very concerned that the BNP could rise here. Scotland needs to be more comfortable with diversity."

Arshad, who is also Scotland’s equal opportunities commissioner, said Scotland has been "in denial" over racism which is "rife" in this country and does not just exist "among yobs and BNP supporters".

Scotland on Sunday can also reveal that the BNP has escalated its activities north of the Border and is considering plans to contest next year’s Holyrood election for the first time if it does well in the English local elections.

"Scotland needs to be more comfortable with diversity."

I have the feeling that these new immigrants have not taken to wearing kilts, playing the bagpipes, and eating haggis. Instead, they retain the same cultural values of the crummy place they left; very likely, they are as resistant to assimilation as the new immigrants in the US are.

Besides, weren't there a lot of Scots in the forefront of the Enlightenment (Adam Smith and others)? Why do we have to change our culture to accomodate newcomers? Why can't they change to our culture? Hasn't anyone thought that the Third World might be a better place if not for many of the cultural practices of the inhabitants which too many people here are encouraging them to retain?

It's not "racism." It's just understanding that you cannot remain a distinct society - as Scotland historically has been from England - by allowing English-style mass settlement of Third Worlders into your society. What would be the "difference" between Scotland and England in a couple decades if Scotland had English levels of mass Third World immigration?

The Scots understand what the French showed they understood in the recent French election. Can France stay "French" if any significant share of its population is people whose primary language isn't French, who are some religion other than the historic religions of France (Catholic, Jewish, Protestant), and who don't relate to the key historic moments of France as "theirs?"

The Scots also understand one other thing - that, if Third World immigrants were such a "boon" to a country, their homelands would be eager to keep them and every other Western nation would want more!

That is correct. If you have a concern for your race then you are a racist. Race should be irrelevant to you. Even if other races show a dislike for your race and are protective of their race you should not notice and dont talk about it.

You do know that Arab immigrants to the US have a quite high socio economic status don't you? Heck, I read in the LA Times that 80% of the Korean shop owners in south central Los Angeles have college degrees from Korea. The erroneous sweeping generalizations around here by folks who don't know the facts, and are just indulging their perjudices, is getting quite old.

There is a tendency for immigrants to be the most ambitious and innovative of their native populace. [Why else would they pull up stakes and move to an unfamiliar country and (perhaps) an unfamiliar language.] Would it not be better for the country of origin to retain these people, as they are precisely the individuals who are most likely to make beneficial change?

Cuba is a prime example of this. By allowing unrestricted immigration of those opposed to Castro, the U.S. has effectively removed any possible anti-Castro opposition in Cuba; the potential leaders of an anti-Castro uprising are now in Miami and largely out of touch with what is occurring in Cuba.

I was speaking of Arab immigrants, not Mexican immigrants. In fact, the same is true of Islamic immigrants in general, and there have been about 500,000 of them I would guess in the last 10 years. Your vanguard comment is correct however, but has not yet manifested itself with Muslim immigrants that are so continually bashed on this board. Indeed, except for Mexico (and perhaps a couple of central american countries), immigrants to the US from just about everywhere tend to be rather upscale. Our immigration laws should not give such a preference to the relatives thing though.

All too often racism is charged when what really exists is a justifiable disdain for imported bottom-feeders of any derivation....

Opening up a restaurant or a market hardly improves the economic growth or prosperity of the host nation it only recycles the existing wealth over a larger pool of people.

Actually, creating wealth is exactly what that does. Your lack of Economic education is showing.
