Excellent post. Another crime to lay at the feet of Johnson and McNamara. The U.S. would have ruled the solar system with these ships, if we had the vision.

Perhaps we can still populate it with the culture of freedom.

Anyone read Niven and Pournelle's Footfall?

Great book. They used a nuclear pulse drive to launch their attack.

They could also concentrate it and use it as a beam weapon.

I remember the line:
God was knocking, and he wanted in bad.

A very jerky ride.

Believe it or not: "jerk" is the scientific term for rate of change of accelleration.

Accelerations are either too high for humans, or the explosions have to very small and nearly constant, simulating continous thrust.

As an "American Kid" who "Grew up" reading the Wonderful, Prophetic, Profoundly Optimistic Science Fiction written by our BEST Trained "Scientific Minds," (Asimov, Heinlein, Pornelle, Dick, Sturgeon, Bishop, etc.,) I am CRUSHED by the thought that America could be "'en Route to the Stars'" by now!

Using the "Atomic Drive Technology" described here, WE SHOULD NOW HAVE A VIABLE COLONY on the MOON & on MARS!!!

Assuming the technological reports seen here are even REMOTELY ACCURATE, WE (Us, the "Human Race,") HAVE BEEN UTTERLY DEPRIVED OF OUR DESTINY by "Self-Appointed Arbiters of Human Technological Capabilities!!"

THE "WIMPS" are controlling our DESTINY!!

Somehow, we MUST allow our "Best & Brightest" to "Take us to our Destiny!" ANY person or Group who deny us our potential MUST BE considered Inimical to our Survival as a Species!!

This one is from over five years ago, but I found it looking for something else, and it’s definitely worth a bookmark I think. :’)
