Several of the prelates denied a report in Monday's Los Angeles Times that an unidentified cardinal said he had been "commissioned" by fellow bishops to lobby the pope's top aides for Law's ouster. "I don't know where that's coming from," said Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles. "There hasn't been a single word about that. We're here for a single purpose: to make sure children are protected."

On Tuesday morning, Diane Sawyer interviewed Cardinal Mahony, over a live feed from Rome. She seemed quite comfortable, albeit smug, in referring to the LA Times report with him. She asked if the pope had asked for Cardinal Law's resignation. When Cardinal Mahony responded by saying that "it had not come up", her expression turned to one of total indignation. (It was amazing to see that shift on her face). She then lashed out at him with "But you told me that ...." and suddenly the feed went dead. She then assured the viewers that they would get Bishop Mahony back because she had LOTS of other questions to ask him.

I had the impression that she was definitely working with "inside" information and that he was the source. She looked as if she had been cheated out of "the big scoop".

Mahony is pure evil in a slick made-for-TV package.

Didn't see that. Do we now call him "Roger the Dodger?"

Everyone knew that Mahony was the source of that L.A. Times article. Then he's leaking stuff to Sawyer. He tried to leak all this to force Cardinal Law's resignation, but it didn't work out for him. He already think's he's the U.S. pope, and by pushing Law of a cliff he's home free. His strategic leaks and ability to get away with anything make him the cardinal equivalent of Bill Clinton.
