Greek is a gendered language. The term for "rock" (petros) used in that verse is expressed in the feminine gender. This "rock" is Peter's willingly receptive assertion of faith (Question: "Who do you say I am?" Answer: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God"). Had that verse intended to express a literal hereditary Petrine line, "rock" would be in the masculine gender.

Got the Greek terms backwards. Christ is translated as saying "petra." That is the feminine form. (It's getting too late at night.)

Yours is one - fairly recent (only 500 years old) - interpretation of that passage.

It must trouble you that - according to Protestant notions that each man is inspired by the Spirit to understand God's Word and there is no place for an official earthly interpreter and keeper of that Word - other interpretations such as my own are certainly possible.
