Ah, but Florida has a little surprise for you!
An ad valorem tax on the ENTIRE VALUE of your stock portfolio!!!
While probably not the biggest in absolute numbers, Nevada has had the fastest growing state population percentage-wise for a couple decades now, comprised largely of wealthy individuals. Boat loads of Silicon Valley types take off for the Lake Tahoe/Reno area when they've made their small fortunes. It is also about the nicest tax jurisdiction in the country. It only has a modest sales tax (6.5-7.25%), no income tax at all (per the State Constitution), the county effective property taxes range from very low to average, and the miscellaneous excise taxes (gas, tobacco, etc) are a good bit lower than average compared to other states.
Of course, across the border is California with a sales tax of around 8%, income tax of almost 10%, and lethal tax laws, so it is no wonder that people from Silicon Valley make the 3-4 hour move to Nevada.
