Is this the book they're referring to in this article? I'd like to buy it.

"The state pays for it all now."

Pray tell, where does the "state" get its money?

don't those parents pay the taxes that keep the schools running in Minnesota?

Not any more. The state pays for it all now. Thanks to Jesse (gov. turnbuckle) Ventura.

And just where does the state get its money?

In New York City, many (most?) public schools won't let parents in the front door for security reasons. One of our secretaries discovered this when she took her 5 year old son to his first day of kindergarten in Brooklyn. She was stopped at the door by a school official who assured her that the boy would be escorted to the right classroom, but would not let her accompany him.

Don't you mean Government Reprogramming Centers? Or Government Indoctrination Centers. My parents both taught in those, small school, wasn't quite as bad back then (Mom just retired - dad retired in early 70's) - inlaws still teach in one, they complain all the time about it, but heck if they will endorse private education or homeschooling.

Can you imagine if a private daycare center made the same kind of policy?

I hear ya. We have one kid in private, the younger in first grade in public. When we fill out the form for whether or not the first grader will be going to that school next year we will be SURE to put our comments on it. At least, "we have heard too many horror stories about the bad indoctrination that is going on in public schools in MN. While it may not be happening here, it is only a matter of time. Best to get out before the damage is done."

Maybe then teachers in the smaller public schools will start paying attention if they hear enough of that kind of thing.

I couldn't home school.. I just couldn't do it. My middle child never listens to me and drives me batty. She's too much like I was at that age. ;-) HOWEVER my husband is toying with the idea of doing it himself after work... or going to work early and doing it in the afternoon. He's a natural teacher and very patient.

We did find a school that uses the public school bussing system out here in the outlying areas, which is a private school for - get this... $780 dollars a YEAR for the first student, $500 something for the second. !! Etc. It only goes through 6th and is very very small. Several grades together. But we may have to do that. Our oldest isn't thrilled about the size of the school and the teeny tiny gym area, but oh well. She'll adjust if we do that.

I thought though that some private school advocates are leery of vouchers too because that will get the gov't foot in the door of the school.

Private schools or home schools are the only answer. Public schools are for the parents who are too lazy to take care of their own kids and who would rather have a new car than pay for a private school. Public schools are a total mess.

What about those of us who's taxes make it so we can't afford private school or an automobile! Mortgage (low rate average house), taxes and food is about all there is money for... This is partly because we are paying $10,000 + for all those students in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the rest of the metro area!

This kind of bull$h!t is exactly why I decided to send my son to private school. Oh, we visited the public elementary school, which came highly recommended by others I spoke with in our community. But what clinched the deal is when I found out the teachers wanted 48-hours advance notice before I could visit MY son, in a school I pay for, and dictated by people whose salaries I provide.

Woops! I've been called out.

I can't guarantee this is the exact textbook mentioned in the article. I spent about an hour digging through various search engines to come up with something definitive.

Found only one book with the same title and it was always the same author. The only "evidence" I have is circumstantial. There's the letter to the editor from the Minnesota Educator mentioning a textbook of the same title. She's a college student, but I think it could be the same one.

Also searched several school textbook publishers but couldn't find anything to my satisfaction. The textbook listed was found on the Barnes & Noble website.

I would suggest contacting the authors of the original posted article if you want to be absolutely sure.

This page has a contact list.
