I think the American government has more to lose than the Vietnamese. They can always claim the prisoner was held by angry villagers, unknown to the government.
American government bureaucrats and politicians however, would have to admit they were wrong about all the POWs being released. There is a good possibility that Iraq still holds one of our pilots. After the initial news, the story was buried.
All members of our military should remember that if captured, we will do whatever is convenient and politically advantageous to obtain their release – and nothing more.
