I thought about running against the local state democrat congress critter. After some research I decided it wasn't worth raising & spending $2 million for a job that would give me (at the time) a $20,000 / year pay cut.

Taking a nominal annum pay cut to stand up for The Republic as a conservative lawmaker for a couple of years, vacating one's mainline business temporarily, is probably too much to ask some people. Even in this time of war and foreign enemies, and unprecedented domestic liberal internal attack.
