Further speculation
It's being called a 'Tourist' plane. Typically, these planes are large enough to accommodate 20 passenger/sightseers. So that would be a multiengine ship with enough mass to do considerable damage to a building. Additionally, tourist plans take off form small airstrips, WITHOUT security that now hinders hijackers at larger airports and airplanes.

My pet theory: an arab radical muslim airport ground crew sees an elderly pilot prepping for flight, and says "here is my best opportunity to become a martyr and strike a blow at the evil satanic West", he kills the pilot either on the ground or in the air after hiding in the plane.
BTW, the "islamic cultural center" in Milan was the European HQ for Al Qaida, so the "WTC of Italy" would be a logical target.

So... was this a charter flight picking tourists up in Milan? Only explanation for an empty flight.
