Hey, HEY, I think you're on to something here...wait a minute...wasn't there some kind of boxer rebellion I read about in school?!?
We are definitely on to something!!!!! The Chinese were involved weren't they??????
Officially supported peasant uprising in 1900 in China that attempted to drive all foreigners from the country. "Boxer" was the English name given to a Chinese secret society that practiced boxing and calisthenic rituals that they believed would make them impervious to bullets. Support for them grew in N China during the late 19th cent., when China's people were suffering from growing economic impoverishment and the nation was forced to grant humiliating concessions to Western powers. In June 1900 an international relief force was dispatched to deal with the growing threat the Boxers posed. The empress dowager, Cixi, ordered imperial forces to block its advance; the conflict escalated and was not resolved until August, when Beijing was captured and sacked. Hostilities were ended with a protocol that required massive reparations to the U.S., Germany, and other foreign powers. See also U.S. Open Door Policy.
