Further speculation… It's being called a 'Tourist' plane. Typically, these planes are large enough to accommodate 20 passenger/sightseers. So that would be a multiengine ship with enough mass to do considerable damage to a building. Additionally, tourist plans take off form small airstrips, WITHOUT security that now hinders hijackers at larger airports and airplanes.

So... was this a charter flight picking tourists up in Milan? Only explanation for an empty flight.

They downed the guy once because they thought he was 'wobbling' as he walked -- This was after he had piloted the twin-engine plane through one of the most impressive routines in the airshow program, capped with a power-off loop, landing, and rollout . . .

An Aero Commander doesn't seat 20. Of course, neither does not a Seneca II or a Piper Cub or a (non existant) Piper Air Commander.

Theoretically, its possible. Practically, it's not. You would have to rig the control cables in such a way that they behave perfectly normal until you activate your control, at which point the on-board controls drop dead.

Then there's the time factor. Making the above modifications to the plane is no simple task. It would take a considerable amount of time to do it, so it would have had to be done the last time they plane went into the shop (probably it's previous annual inspection.)

I met Mr. Hoover at the AOPA convention in San Jose in 1996, just after he was "Hoovered". What a gracious gentleman. We did a brief on-camera interview with him for a compilation video for the banquet dinner. Nothing wrong with him. Saw him perform at Oshkosh after he regained his medical - what he can do with a twin - WOW! He was also in one of the big hangar buildings, signing books, last summer.
