I heard Sean Hannity today pitching the flat tax and it sounded good. But comparing to the consumption tax it is just as bad as the current system as it retains government monitoring (spying) of its citizens.

Abolishing the Income Tax will reduce products and services cost by 22% the cost of monitoring the income, of accountants, of reporting to the government, and the cost of preparing the income tax. It will free the people currently wasting their time and energy on this bureaucracy to apply their talents to the creative use and to produce income instead of counting it.

It will also close down the American KGB (oops wrong three letters) for good.
It will also greatly spur the economy by freeing all that money and energy to be used creatively, which would also mean more spending and more taxes paid.

The poor people would pay basically nothing (remember they currently pay at least 22% on every product they consume) and the rest will be paid by those who consume more. As it was pointed before that would include the criminals which would be the first. (Does it mean the current system protects criminals??? Ha? Ha? Congress for criminals?)
