Why don't you try explaining to ex-texan exactly why your good friends, the Israelis, killed his friend, the U.S. serviceman.

It's been explained many times before, in forums much higher and more demanding of factual truth than Free Republic. It was a case of mistaken identity. This happened on day four of a six day war; the Israeli pilots were full of adrenalin and fear. Sh*t happens. Accept it and move on, or join the grassy knowl crowd.

This issue is settled. Congress has refused to take it up again.

I see, so this now makes it OK to forget the entire incident?

If it was indeed an accident, and Israel has nothing hide, why is there such resistance to an investigation. We lost good men aboard that ship. Don't their loved ones deserve to know the truth?

I didn't notice any "official" apology from Israel to the families of those killed by their mistake in your post of the chronology of events.

People go on and on around here about responsibility for actions - has Israel ever stood up and taken their responsiblity in this situation? Are they not admittedly culpable?

There isn't. There never was. Between 1967 and 1991, The Navy, the CIA, the Joint Chiefs, and numerous Senate and House committees have investigated the Liberty attack, and none of them have come to the conclusion that the ship was deliberately attacked by the Israelis. It happened because of bad communication on the part of the U.S. and major errors on the part of Israel. However, it was not intentional. It would never have happened if Israel weren't in the middle of the Six Day War. Does the phrase "The Fog of War" ring a bell?

It sure does, but does that now make them any less responsible?

Israel did officially apologize and paid millions to the victims and their families.

I don't think the debate is about reponsibility, it's about whether or not Israel deliberately and knowingly attacked a ship that it knew to be a U.S. Navy ship.

Sorry about the triple post. My computer was doing a major slowdown and I did not think the first two attempts made it.

Well, then I feel like a bit of jackass.

I don't believe Israel ever intentionally attacked the USS Liberty.

I was addressing the statement that the government never investigated, which it did. I left out the Israeli governments investigations too.

Israel acknowledged their mistake, took responsibility, apologized and paid around $13 million to the State Dept, who distributed it in early 1968.
