Lucent to Cut 5,000 More Jobs - Source Thu Apr 11, 4:28 PM ET By Ben Klayman CHICAGO (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. plans to cut about 5,000 more jobs than previously expected by the end of June because of the slowdown in the telecom sector, a source close to the company said on Thursday.

Just got to thinking, with the economy supposedly recovering, and layoffs continuing all around us, how many Freepers are currently out of work? How are they finding the job market?

Luckily the coapany I worked for Did Good and accelerated my options when I was voluntarily laid off. Job market is pretty bad out there in high tech (programming). At one time or another 10 friends of mine were laid off this past year.

Agreed. I know more people in the last year that have gotten laid off, and have remained laid off, than I do those who had no work and found it. This "recovery" is pure fabrication and spin pushed by the WH. The facts are that over half the new jobs created are being done by the government! GDP has increased primarily because of government spending!

My company announced its office relocation way back in April of 2001. My last day was November 30. I've been networking and interviewing since then but haven't found quite what I'm looking for yet. It's not a bad job market if you know what you are doing, but it isn't as good as when I first graduate from college in 2000 either.

Taxes for one. No one can own a house with the property taxes over $3,000 a year if they make $10,000 and also must pay into Social Security.

I went through this same thing for a few months. Then I decided to make lemonade out of the lemon I was in.

I'm a software developer by trade, and was laid off from an Internet company. 3 years experience was just not good enough to get a foot into companies looking for candidates with 5+ years experience. So, I went it alone.

I know my grandfather always said that manufacturing jobs are absolutely essential to this country and service jobs depend on a healthy manufacturing base.

Your grandfather was right. In addition, my husband says that the way to create wealth is to take raw materials and add value to them, i.e manufacture a product that you can sell for more than the cost of the raw materials plus the labor. I think he's right on that one too.

Unfortunately our manufacturing base is slipping away. Last month I was in Chicago for a week at National Manufacturing Week (the largest trade show in America -- at least it used to be). It was down about a third in attendance and in number of booths from last year and only half of what it was 3 years ago. But there were more foreign firms represented there than ever, and they were aggressive in their marketing. Mexico brought a booth for every state in their country (about 25 booths, I estimate) and they were filled with bright, young professionals anxious to take our work home.

We are a contract manufacturer doing specialized electronic assemblies for OEMs, but my computer was filled with emails, when I got back from the show, from Asian and SE Asian companies wanting me to subcontract my customers' to them. In fact, one of my competitors had a booth right across the aisle from me, and we were astonished to find that they do not do ANY of their own work. They subcontract it all out.

Gives me an idea for a new marketing piece, "When you let a contract, do you really know who is building your assemblies? Come over to our shop and watch your assembly be built every step of the way! We will never send your precious assembly to Fly-by-nite Contracting in Huey's garage when you are not looking."

So why is it that an engineer can't live on $10,000 today but yet could in say 1950?

Because an experienced teacher was paid about $4000 a year in 1950. Do you know any teacher that works for $4000 per year today? Average teacher pay in my district is $63,000. In order to pay the average teacher $63,000, I (as well as a lot of my neighbors) have to pay $10,000 annually in property taxes + major state income taxes. That is a convoluted way to say INFLATION!

Yes I am an American. I also know the simple equation of supply and demand. The supply of jobs is small, the number of available workers is large (given that the supply includes all the engineers in India and China) RESULT = NO JOB FOR ME. Now do I pass?

I've been out of work here in Denver since the first of the year. It really sucks. I never thought I'd be unemployed this long.

I hear ya! It's going on 1 full year in the NYC area for me. The job scene is horrible up here!

Count me among them. Looking to network in the NYC area right now. I have been doing temp work, but no one hires temps because of the finder's fee involved.

The company I work for, a constuction equipment dealer, was just sold, and in a surprise move, the buyers packaged us with another company and sold the whole works to our biggest competitor. We all got to reapply and interview for our own long held jobs and, essentially, start over. We put the old, 96 year old company out of business two weeks ago, and I started in the new one on April Fools day.

As far as I'm cocerned, we, from the old company, are still in limbo. This year has been a wild ride for us so far.

And you also say inflation changed, but inflation did not change. Inflation is the decline in purchasing power of the medium of exchange. That has not changed. In 1950 that is what it meant, and today that is what it means. Therefore, inflation did not change.

I did not say that the definition of the word "inflation" is what changed. Please, I am an engineer, not an English major. What has changed from 1950 to today is the cost of living has increased - which is inflation. A slice of pizza use to cost 25 cents in 1960. So the real question is why has the cost of living increased. I am not an economics major so I do not know the root cause for this. I know the basics, too much money being printed = inflation. Why don't you tell us the root cause.
