In 1988, several weeks after Pollard reported his alleged sexual abuse by the Rev. George Rosenkranz to the Archdiocese of Boston, the church official who handled abuse complaints said he found nothing to justify removing the priest from ministry.
The Rev. John B. McCormack, now bishop of Manchester, N.H., said Rosenkranz merely had ''sexual issues,'' adding that what Pollard viewed as abuse - acts that included Rosenkranz's request that he masturbate in front of him - may simply have been expressions of affection, according to Pollard.

Paul is not referring to sin, but of service. Further, if this refers to "purgatory" - then every person must go there - - which is not even the teaching of the Catholic church.
Christ said in of His last breath "It is completion." Think about that. This is precisly why the catholic church is in trouble. Look at the title of this thread again. Many people within the catholic church believe what its authorities say, without having a faith grounded in salvation by Christ alone.

This whole mess continues to spiral out of control, with no end in sight. To say the least, the reports the other day out of the Vatican that the Pope has been "deeply touched" by the suffering surrounding allegations of sexual abuse by American priests, and that he "extended his hand in support to the bishops of the United States" is nothing but lousy spin control and a message that was too little, to late.
The Catholic church in America is in dire need of a clean sweep, from the top down. Additionally, the Church as a whole needs to author, publish and enforce strict guidelines to deal with these problems, including immediate notification to law enforcement from the get go. Anything short of this would be unacceptable.
On a related note, neighbors of mine have observed public censure of fellow citizens who are Catholic by those who are not. A well known Priest was jeered and taunted while in line at the grocery.
These are the signs of a church deep in the thick of trouble.
Maybe the church needs its own version of malpractice insurance.
