Halle Berry hurt in blast during Bond film scene
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | 04/10/2002 | Hugh Davies

THE Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry has been injured in Spain while filming her starring role in the new James Bond movie Die Another Day.

Berry, 33, was being directed in a risky scene which involved her co-star Pierce Brosnan, playing Agent 007, shooting down a helicopter being flown by Rick Yune in the part of a North Korean assassin called Xao.

Above Cadiz - being used to depict the Cuban capital Havana - stuntmen flew the helicopter in dangerous manoeuvres amid spectacular explosions. A piece of debris from a smoke grenade flew into Berry's left eye.

The Hollywood star, who plays the unscrupulous Jinx in the film, was taken to a nearby clinic where Dr Antonio Fernandez removed the fragment from her eye in a 30-minute operation.

The injury will not leave Berry with any lasting damage or disfigurement but Dr Fernandez said it could have been far more serious. He added: "She has been quite lucky, in fact."

Berry, the first black woman to win an Oscar in the 74-year-old history of the Academy Awards, for her role as a death row widow in Monster's Ball, returned to the set with an inflamed cornea.

The actress, whose mother is from Liverpool, is being paid about £2.8 million for the part. Reports from the set indicate that Bond first meets her in the Caribbean, off Havana, in a scene reminiscent of Ursula Andress emerging from the sea off Thailand as Honey Ryder in the 1962 film Dr No.

Berry said at a press conference on the set last week that working on the movie would only "add shine to my Oscar". She has confirmed that she will not be appearing topless, as she did in the film Swordfish, with John Travolta.

The producers have already completed the traditional scene-setting opening sequence for the film, with Bond, sporting shoulder-length hair and a beard, escaping across the de-militarised zone between North and South Korea. This was was shot outside Aldershot in Hampshire.

After wrapping up filming in Spain, the actors are to move to Iceland and Hawaii, as well as to the Eden project in Cornwall. The film due for release in November.

The actress, whose white mother is from Liverpool

Credit, where credit is due.

They just had to slip in her Oscar win (first black woman in 74 years), like anybody cares about her affirmitive action Oscar.

Wait a minute. Shouldn't that be "our Oscar"? When she accepted it, didn't she proclaim that it was for all those who went before her? (I'm probably wrong because I didn't actually watch the Oscar Lovefest, just heard the reports.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't another black woman won before? as best supporting actress?

In that case, I'll wait until it comes out on dvd to see it........when it's available at a 4 night rental.....for one dollar.

Yep, they threw her an affirmitive action Oscar this year. She'll get the sympathy Oscar next year because she got the million-dollar fragment in her eye.

They better get into trouble. Though a happier outcome than what happened to Bruce Lee's son.

Projected ticket sales just went in the dumper.

Yes, Hattie McDaniel, Mammy from Gone With the Wind, won for best actress. Her speech left Berry's in the dust (not hard to do, admittedly), and was obviously genuine, unlike Berry's.
