Shareholders Contest Boeing Sexual Orientation Clause

Shareholders of a major U.S. corporation have the chance to vote on the special status given homosexuality by the company.

The Boeing Company's business includes commercial airliners, military aircraft and the International Space Station. But some of its shareholders think it should not be involved in promoting homosexuality through its employment policies.

Boeing currently includes "sexual orientation" as part of its employee non-discrimination clause — equating homosexuality with race, religion, national origin, gender, age and disabilities — but there is a proposal to remove it.

Steve Jackson, a Boeing engineer, feels his employer shouldn't be taking steps to equate homosexual relationships with marriage.

"(The policy) reduces the value of the real thing. It renders it meaningless," Jackson said. "And so, if we are to protect marriage, it's important that the traditional benefits and so forth that come with marriage are reserved to a legitimate marriage between one man and one woman."

He's backing a resolution now on the way to shareholders that requests the Boeing Board of Directors to amend its employment policies to "exclude any reference to sexual orientation." Awkwardly titled the "Proposal on Amending Equal Employment Opportunity Policy," the resolution must garner a majority vote from shareholders in order to pass. The votes must be tallied in advance of the April 29th shareholder meeting in Chicago.

Attorney Wiley Jones, who drafted the proposal, maintains it would effectively return power to the states.

"Each local employment center of Boeing, wherever that might be, would be governed by federal and applicable state law," Jones said.

He said the proposed change would prevent Boeing from nationally promoting the liberal view of employee relationships.

The Board of Directors is recommending the proposal be rejected, but Jackson and Jones are calling on shareholders to vote in favor of the change.

Boeing gives fringe benefits to same sex significant others.

But ONLY same sex significant others.

Significant others of different sex are not covered.

So if you want your sweety pie covered, make damn sure your sweety pie is homosexual.
Otherwise, tough beans.

In many jurisdictions, sexual orientation discrimination is illegal. They may just be covering their *sses leagally, rather than "promoting" homosexuality.
