Suggesting that poor Southerners fought and died preserve slavery for the small number of rich plantation owners is as ridiculous as suggesting that the Northerners fought and died to end slavery.

In the 1860 census there were 76,651 White Families in Texas and 21,878 of them owned slaves. 70,994 in Louisiana and 22,033 owned slaves.

In 1850 there were 347,525 slave holders in the South (head of Households)

I don't believe the facts bear this out. That 30% figure of any aggregate group of slave holders is the highest I have seen mentioned for any one group.

and you got this nonsense where? my home county in Texas had exactly 2 slaveholders, owning ONE slave EACH.

the average individual NET WORTH of soldiers of the south was <$ 25.00! slaves were EXPENSIVE & less than 5% of southerners could afford to purchase a slave, even if they wished to do so.
