Sorry, but I have read many posts supposedly explaining that the Civil war (or perhaps you prefer War Between the States) was somehow not about slavery. Anyone who reads a history of the Civil War knows, as Lincoln stated quite clearly in his Second Inaugaral Address, that the war was about slavery.

Sorry, but you have been duped by revisionist historians - slavery was a VERY minor side issue of the war of northern aggression. Those of us who went through public education before the NEA and gays got ahold of the "educational" agenda (actually a movement for socailly engineering mind-numbed robots with no sense of right and wrong) KNOW the facts (i.e, REAL, not revisionist) history, and slavery wasn't what the civil war was about!! Try economics or states rights, but don't presume to be so simplistic or revisionist to say slavery was THE issue!!

It wasn't!

as an old prof from my grad school days once said: "only the simpletons need, want or desire simplistic answers!"

slavery was AN issue, but NOT THE issue that caused the WBTS, any more than sectional rivalry was.

slavery caused the war in the same way that fish cause massive floods! for the "planter aristocracy" slavery was possibly the main issue, but for the majority of southron families slavery was either NOT an issue, OR was a part of the generalized antipathy of the celtic-derived southrons for ANY interference in their lives by the central government!

my mother's family in AL,MS & LA were FAR more interested in keeping their flocks, herds & "moonshine" out of the hands of the sheriff & taxmen and the coins in their pockets!

the Bankheads were totally dis-interested in the plight of both slaver & slave; it was simply not on their radarscreen.

believe me when i say that NO member of the "great un-washed" of the southland fought to perserve, protect or continue the institution of chattal slavery for the benefit of a handfull of planters/aristocrats!

a dear friend of mine at UNO says that had we won our war for freedom from the damnyankees, the planters might have been NEXT on the list of the HATED overlords. the WBTS was as much a REVOLUTION of the "peasant classes" as it was a war against the damnyankee government!

my father's family were POOR American Indians in SC & what is now western KS,AR & OK; the Freeman's had NO $$$$$$ to buy a slave with, even if they had desired to own one!

if anyone wants a SIMPLISTIC answer for the WBTS, let it be this:

the southrons wanted the damnyankees out of their lives, and the southland out of the union! the LUST for LIBERTY was & IS now the main cause of the WBTS!
