What so many people don't know is that Shepard had HIV.

When and how was this determined?

I found in an old email that the March, 1999 issue of Vanity Fair reported Matthew Shepard tested HIV positive in the hospital. Since I've never read Vanity Fair I cannot say the magazine actually reported the above.

The first time I heard it, that Shepard was HIV positive was on talk radio a couple of year's back on talk radio, on a drive across the western desert. The show host said that it was in the seriff's report.Damn near went off the road at the implications that were fully possible - one had to ask who was set on murder, if, he knew he was positive. Fast forward to 2002 and go to google.com and type in Mathew Shepard HIV Positive Didn't stay long enough to chase down the sherrif's report - but long enough to ensure that I wasn't spreading "urban legend".
