Taller Tower Proposed for World Trade Center Replacement

A proposal to replace the destroyed World Trade Center towers with a single 2,000-foot television and radio transmission tower will be announced next week. The new building would stand 250 feet taller than the TV and radio antenna that stood atop the old Twin Towers.

The proposed $200 million structure would feature a "guy-wired airship design," according to an artist's rendition set for unveiling at a Las Vegas convention of broadcasters, reported Saturday's New York Post.

Though the structure would include only a small fraction of the office space that housed more than 50,000 workers in the old Twin Towers, final plans could include a skytop restaurant, observation deck and retail stores.

The plan's chief backer is Metropolitan Television Alliance chairman William Baker, who is also chairman of New York's PBS outlet WNET, which lost its transmitter in the 9-11 attacks.

"Our goal is to get back to full power as quickly as possible," Baker says, according to a text of his remarks set for delivery at next week's unveiling.

Sorry, but only two new towers will be sufficient.

When I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago, the general consensus seemed to support four 60 story towers in that location. I haven't seen any hard evidence to support that, but several of the locals told me that was the leading plan.

Cspan just had on the guy who used to be a NYC firefigher who just published another book about firefighting, this one about the firefighters at the twin towers.

One point he brought up is that the fire commissioner opposed the original twin towers for being dangerous; if they hadn't fell, the only way they could fight a fire is to go to the roof or else let the thing burn upward till it went out by itself.

The port authority however is not under NYCity law and built it anyway.

In view of this, unless you give everyone on the upper floors parachutes, I doubt you'll find people to work there...especially since those of use who know Manhatten remember how the towers stood high and lonely at the south side of the island--as opposed to having a lot of other buildings nearby that would make it harder to crash into them.

You're right, but the point's moot since nobody would insure it.

As for the radio/tv tower idea: ICK.

Good question. I finally figured it out. Click on Free Republic on the top left of the page, and go to the main page. Look down below on the left, and you will see links to Log On and Log Off. There may be some other way to do it, but I didn't find it right away.
