Authorities Alarmed Over New Mystery Missiles Against Israel
Naharnet - Lebanon ^ | 4-7-02

Posted on 04/07/2002 5:01:15 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Authorities were rendered speechless Sunday as mystery missiles fired from Lebanon struck anew at Israel's western Galilee district and the bisected Blue Line town of Al Ghajar, wounding three Arabs and heating border tensions up to a new peak.
Officials in Beirut declined to comment on the unrelenting attempts to expand the scope of border hostilities beyond the traditional Shebaa farms battle zone after repeatedly asserting that the government would not allow such an expansion.

"State officials are in deep silence about the mystery missiles," An Nahar said, noting that the U.N. peacekeeping forces discovered and dismantled two missiles mounted on timed rocket launcher for the first time-ever on Saturday.

The newspaper quoted Lebanese security officials as saying unknown assailants climbed out of a car near the town of Wazzani, just one kilometer of from common border line, fired off six-to-seven Katyusha missiles and fled.

The 107mm rockets, which have a 7-kilometer range, hit the Israeli-held sector of Al Ghajar, wounding three Arab inhabitants. They also hit field in the Western Galilee, but caused no casualties there.

Lebanese troops and police were still hunting for the attackers Sunday, which are widely believed to belong to Ahmed Jibreel's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command.

The Damascus-based PFLP-GC maintains bases in the border region of Arkoub and the western Bekaa. . The group also maintains close ties with Iran and Hizbullah and has repeatedly asserted in the past two days that it would not stay idle while Israel "massacres Palestinians" in the West Bank.

Hizbullah, in turn, kept the Shebaa farms zone of the border aflame through a sixth straight day, blasting three Israeli army outposts with barrages of Katyusha rockets and mortar fire Saturday evening.

Israeli fighter jets struck back with six bombing sorties, firing eight air-to-surface missiles at suspected Hizbullah rocket-launching bases in olive groves surrounding the border towns of Kfar Shouba and Kfar Hammam. No casualties were reported.

I've been here since Jan. of 1998, every single day and have never logged off in all that time.
Never felt the need to.

Judging from what you posted, I think logging off FreeRepublic is not your biggest problem.

"The 107mm rockets, which have a 7-kilometer range, hit the Israeli-held sector of Al Ghajar, wounding three Arab inhabitants. They also hit field in the Western Galilee, but caused no casualties there."

These sound like the same type rockets fired at peace-keepers in Kabul last night.

Katuysha-style rockets have been around since WWII. I don't know what the big deal is. "Mystery Missles" is just bogus. No mystery here - tabloid headlines sell papers to idiots. This paper is from Lebanon, and from what I can tell, there are a lot of idiots in the Arab world.
