See 37. All of you non-koolaid drinkers should have squealed when the US originally agreed to this.

In fact, we probably did and there are doubtless old FR threads on this.

Getting the US out of this agreement may not be one of those stroke of the pen things a president can arbitrarily end since the agreement must have been approved by congress. Of course, I don't know if anyone in DC wants to end it or not.

Think I will check around and find out what the truth is . I am not going to form an opinion on one article.

Calling this ill-advised is an understatement, to say the least.

Where were you in way back in 1994 when this agreement was made by Bill Clinton?

WERDEN: Washington has described its decision to waive the inspection requirement for this year only, as vital to its national security interests, in so doing it's giving North Korea another chance at making the agreement work.

CHANG: "Abandoning this project might cause very considerable impact on the overall security situation in South Korean peninsula which is not easy to anybody to deal with. So peace and stability is at stake so abandoning this project immediately causes will bring about tension and possibly confrontation between the two sides."

These explanations deserve scrutiny. Does anyone know anything about this program? It sounds like one of those Kumbaya joint economic cooperative efforts between adversaries that only a brilliant mind like Madeline Albright and the dope smokers in the Clinton White House could conceive. There could be no anticipation that Stone Age North Korea would fall behind schedule on their part of the program.

As late as January 27, 2002 inspections were still required and N Korea was still blocking them.

As far as I can tell so far, I have found nothing on the inspections requirement being lifeted.

Newsmax article indicates that NK is still not permitting inspections from Jan 2002

so many times after the dust has settled, I've found that what appeared to be a nose thumbing at those of us who put him in office is just the opposite.

WOW...a lone voice of reason. It is a well known fact that the media leans way left, and yet those who want to hate and bash Bush hang on the media's every word and believe every utterance given that promotes their agenda. The pinkies have incrementally altered our society over 70+ years and if every (and I mean EVERY) little thing doesn't go exactly as "conservative" Bush bashers want it, then they throw a tantrum, grab their marbles and run home to mommy...sheese, being President of the US is truly a horrid job.

I'm pretty sure that the US has completely lost it's collective freakin mind.

The ONLY thing that I can think that Bush is doing is some really nicely played diplomacy : "Saying nice doggie while looking for a REALLY big stick"

You're welcome. I guess I we could e-mail the White House on it.

If the guy Clark is a former ambassador and is now with the Carnegie Peace organization, though, it smells of disinfo. But it is worth delving into.

This is even more outrageous than the terms of the agreement signed by Clinton. Clintons agreement required inspections. GW is not requiring such. This is total insanity. Maybe The Rev. Sun Myung Moon's millions to Poppy were not spent in vain?

Well, first let's see if we can confirm the info. I cannot think of any reason we would change our policy on this since the inspection was the whole point in the first place.

About the only reason we would say OK to no inspections, is if we backed off on the agreement to supply oil OR found out that their nuclear project was already dead, OR if we were going to end their nuclear project for them.

Did the North Koreans ever actually finish their nuclear facility? As I understood it, they were still working on it when Clinton made the 94 agreement on it. If they have not completed it, there isn't much point in paying them not to use it since it would be unuseable anyway. Admittedly it was a dumb idea the first time around, but why give them oil or do inspections if they don't have a functional nuke facility all ready to go?

See if you can find anything on it, because so far I can't and the source is about as credible as Debka.

Find a REAL source where it says we are no longer requiring inspections. This source is 100% unverified.

So you're saying that it's okay for Bush to send this 95 million to North Korea and waive the inspection? HUH? It's on the radar screen today because North Korea is one of the AXIS OF EVIL remember? In '94 they were a tiny blip, but I daresay, most in this forum would be against us sending the cash to them back in '94.

I have do admit, I didn't read the entire thread, but what I realy do believe is, that this President is acting very smart, due to his very very good advisers. It's well known, that poverty brings lots of social uproar and revolution. By help from "rich" countries to the "poor" it might be a first step to bring these nations to a better start. It's actually called, "Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe" (I don't know how to translate, I will try) It's like helping those countries to help theireself. Education is the basic of everything. So, when people have to eat, the next thing they think about is having schools. Education is so importand. Why is the "west" so much more developed, than the "East"? Schools, Education!!! So let us not critizise money given to North-Korea, these people eat dirt, to have something in their stomage. If we share at least food and knowledge, the world will be a better place! I, at least hope so and it sounds somehow logical. Of cource it must be for sure, that those governments don't use this money for military reasons, but I think, that's part of smart interogations. (Sorry about my English, in German I'm a lot better!)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/asia-pacific/newsid_1908000/1908571.stm From the article: "Under the 1994 Agreed Framework an international consortium is building two proliferation-proof nuclear reactors and providing fuel oil for North Korea while the reactors are being built. In releasing the funding, President George W Bush waived the Framework's requirement that North Korea allow inspectors to ensure it has not hidden away any weapons-grade plutonium from the original reactors."
