"The idea that nearly 300 people would travel across the country to spend a weekend complaining about such trivial insults if, indeed, they can even be considered insults struck me as weird."It is.

Atheists, after all, think of themselves as superior beings, as rationalists who have succeeded in rising above the superstition and prejudice that so blight the lives of their fellow citizens.
And the very first thing they do is fall for the logical fallacy of argumentum ad ignorantiam. Oh yeah, rational to the last..

Wow. I can think of 300 people who really need to grow up and move on. Reminds me of an article I read about NAMBLA.
That license plate is just sad.

It simply amazes me that someone hates God and religion when they don't even believe that he exists... Kinda silly don't you think?
To: JediGirl
What does it make you if you don't believe that Atheism exists? ;)

(I consider myself a "non-believer") I find it strange that few of these people realize that "American Atheists" was started to serve as a Communist front group.

Jesus is The Way, The Truth, The Life; you'll find that out, sooner or later. (preferably sooner; it's a much cooler experience that way, believe me!).

"Atheists felt marginalized and angered" Oh, good grief. As an agnostic, I must once again apologize for the inane behavior of these people. Most of us have much better things to do than develop persecution complexes.
To: Hajman
Not correct, some Atheists and Agnostics believe that some allways and some over their lives may require religion, and without it chaos and anarchy would rule.
The only supposition you and I make is that we will deal with each other humanely and that you would not prosecute me for my beliefs.

I was talking about the Atheists' absolute claim that there is no God. Not sure where you're comming from..

Why do you post these primers and then sit back and watch? Why don't you respond to the posters, after all, you started the thread. 20 whole minutes ago. Go read elsewhere if this bothers you so much.

(1) She was not looking for help with homework.
(2) If you're going to engage her in a debate that's TOTALLY off-topic from the thread, use that little "private reply" button that's available on your screen. Save the rest of us from the grief you bring.

I have met more than a few atheists in my e-travels, generally they are not dis-like-able sorts; though some tend to be a little militant, which leaves one wondering whether their atheism has more to do with a problem they have with religion, as opposed to an honest evaluation of the evidence for the existence of the Divine.
I understand agnosticism as being "ignorant" [agnostos= ignorant in Greek] and atheism as being "sure" there is no GOD. In my view, it is not rational to be an atheist, since how can one be "sure" there is no GOD?
The Good Book says "The fool says in his heart, there is no GOD."

Exactly!
You know, there's something I just don't get with atheists who claim to be on the political Right. My problem is that they seem not to care that it was "godless" societies like Hitler's Germany, Lenin's Russia, Mao's China, Pol Pot's Cambodia, or Castro's Cuba is truly akin to them. I know they won't admit it, but it would scare me to think my ideals were just like those despots and mass murders.
I know, they would tell me about The Inquisition and the Ottoman Empire and the bloodshed involved in both. But what they won't admit is that during these times, books of faith (whichever faith it may be) were not mass produced and that most during this same time were illiterate. If someone preached a perverted faith, the illiterate couldn't prove otherwise. We don't have this problem today. Nowhere in the Bible does God in the person of Jesus tell us to go out and kill in His Name to spread the Gospel.
But what about the atheists? It doesn't seem to bother them that they are in the line of Karl Marx or Charles Darwin, the "Father of Racism." They say that they have no faith yet exude faith by believing something came from nothing! Oh, and they have the audacity to think of themselves superior.
You'd think it logical for them to totally ignore what they don't believe. Such is not the case.
I have a theory of my own (wink, wink). I think that atheists have to convince themselves day by day that there is no God. Otherwise, it wouldn't bother them so much, no?

Exactly. Which is why I agree more with agnosticism.

I never understood this whole "atheism" thing. I mean, I don't believe in life on Mars. But that doesn't mean I have to define myself as one who does not believe in life on Mars. I don't go to "No life on Mars" conventions and I don't belong to any "No life on Mars" advocacy groups. Nor do I take offense to those who believe there is life on Mars. If millions of my fellow citizens decided to meet for a couple of hours each Sunday morning to talk about life on Mars, it would not concern me.
How is it possible to be so passionate about something you do not believe in?
