There's absolutely nothing wrong with the ROTC route, IMHO. An engineering or Computer Science degree can't be beat.
The college training will give him marketable skills when his military career is over, and his military career will give him invaluable life skills. We all talk about Duty, Honor, Country. Courage, Integrity, Honor, Diligence, Judgment... The things that make him a man to be respected come to those who take their service seriously, and are willing to learn.
He sounds like he has his sights firmly set on an honorable goal...your best bet is to support him in his desires, and only nudge him a teensy little bit if you see him straying!
Out of curiosity, college there in Ohio? I contemplated Ohio State before the family moved to Phoenix.

Wow, thanks HiJinx, for a whole lot of good advice in a small space! Especially the thoughts on majors and ROTC.

He's going to college in Minnesota where our older two kids attend (small, private Christian college). There are a lot of really good colleges in Ohio, including Ohio State (where my husband and I both got our Masters degrees). You would have done well to go there, but you would have been significantly colder than you were in Arizona! :o)
