If people had to sacrifice (drive an hour) to get to Mass on Sunday (due to a severe shortage of priests after the scum is skimmed) we would soon find out who is dedicated and devout.

What's the point of finding out who's "dedicated and devout"? It might make you feel good, but American Catholics are not going to drive an hour each way to Mass, nor should they.

Nor should they have to tolerate third-world priests imported in, just so celibacy can be preserved. We've got a newly-ordained Hispanic priest in our parish who has to read his sermons and frequently asks me when I lector, before Mass, how to pronounce certain words. It's almost painful to have to attend one of his Masses.

There are some on this site who are almost salivating to see the priesthood reduced to some "remnant" of men who will drag the Church back to 1950.

Personally, I'd like to see it dragged back to about 33 AD.

With regards your previous post about doctors'wives,a community with which I am familiar, you are naive.

First of all in this ole material world we live in,a husband with a healthy income, mid hundred thousand and up,is a valuable commodity,I don't know any doc's who make less,do you?Despite the income I have heard complaining about the calls in the night.

Second, most of the wives I know are very much of the world and believe its best for overpopulation and numerous other causes they champion,to not procreate beyond the socially acceptable, two children per family.

Third, most of the wives I know (more than half)have great jobs.

Sinkspur, everytime I find one of your posts I end up thinking about points I really hadn't thought about before. The end result is that I become more convinced that relaxing the celibacy rules would be to court even more disasters.

I am privileged to be served by several priests from Africa. They serve as chaplains to private schools and institutions in my community while they are studying full time for advanced degrees at local universities and then they will reurn to Africa. They are the most devout and holy priests I know and have so much to teach us about following Jesus. It is a beautiful thing to see Western missionary activity of the past in Africa now bearing fruit back here in the USA. Africa is now evangelizing us! Many of us are grateful to be served by priests who are doctrinally sound and holy men - a welcome respite from the insanity of many clergy in the US.
