It follows then, that, at least in Virginia's case, the United States was guilty of invading a sovereign nation. A sovereign nation that had taken up arms in support of states that were in armed rebellion against the United States. The U.S. was guilty of nothing more than fighting against a sovereign nation that had voluntarily placed itself in a state of war against it.
