My father recently picked up a 50 cal. He spent about $5000 (before the $900 scope), and the thing weighs an easy 30 lbs, probably more. This is not a weapon that can be used on a day to day basis by a criminal, firing at the hip, to rob a liquor store. Why is this so hard for the anti-gun nuts to understand?
Because they are not 'gunning' for the criminal. They are after sportsmen who compete peacefully with this firearm.
The antigunners love criminals but hate legitimate sportsmen.
I think most of them do understand the uselessness of the .50 cal. rifle in street crime. What they claim to be afraid of is the rifle's potential use in terrorism.
Of course, it doesn't really make sense to buy a heavy, expensive rifle to take out a pipeline or politician, when an inexpensive bomb or a cheaper rifle will do. But, this is a chance to screw with gunowners and generally abuse power, so none of those pracitical concerns will really matter to the control freaks in California.
