Actually, RonDog, I am really frustrated. I really can't figure out the new format and can't find my way around very well. I wish it would be simpler to understand like it was before.

You mean you want me to be different than the millions of illegal aliens and actually assimilate?

You've shown that you are resistant to change on this, and many other, boo-hoo threads.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE
FORMAT SO FAR!!!
GREAT!!! THANKS JOHN

I like the right sidebar. I like having the General Interest and News Activism options in the upper right. I like the generally clean look and style.

THANKS TONS.

This link:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/656482/posts

provides a thread which should be helpful. I'll look around a bit . . . probably the opening screen . . . my shortcut is linked to the latest posts screen. . .

In the upper left corner you should see "Free Republic" in bold blue. Click on it. The opening screen comes up. Go down the left sidebar until you see logoff or some such. Click it. etc.

You are not alone!

Fortunately, Jim and John are working on it. As I posted on another thread:

Message from JIM ROBINSON about the "Easter revisons" to FR's BETA launch:

"So this whole effort was to find the perfect FONT??? And perfect headline color? I am still annoyed and liked FR much better a month ago before all the changes..." - alisasny

"Acually, the exercise had nothing to do with finding the perfect font. We are in the process of expanding the forum software. We are going to be adding several new forums and new features over the coming weeks.
We added the left side menu bar so we would have a place to list the new forums as well as the new navigational tools that will be needed for the new features we are adding. We did not want to eat too far into the right hand sidebars so we added the new area. And we introduced the blue colored background (and flag image) to act as a separater to separate the new side bar from the text area. We also added a box around the center text area for the same reason.
Many people said the flag background made the page harder to read so we removed it. No big deal and no loss. They also said the font was too small, so we increased it. The blue background and the box around the center text was thought to make the page look too busy, so we went to an all white background, removed the box and left more white space as the separater.

This actully would have worked very well for what we were trying to accomplish, however, we found that it would not work out for our WebTV users. Seems their browser is not very wide and our new left side menu was pushing their right sidebars off the page.

Ok, so we punt and go to plan B. We remove the left side menu and move most of the navigation tools back to the top of the page. We've now gone from two lines of navigational tools to three lines, and we've moved the list of forums back to the right sidebar. So, we will now try to find places to squeeze in the new links for our additional new features as we add them, without making any additional drastic layout changes. I think the current layout is functional and not all that cluttered or "artsy fartsy" as at least one complainant claimed.
Hopefully, it will work out well for most people.

Sorry about the fire drill. Just keeping everyone alert. Hah!
Thanks, Jim"

Hooray for Plan B! Free Republic RULES!!! (Particularly now that you can READ it again.)

Please also restore full power to the quick-search ("find-in-forum") box.

The correspondent box on the old interface allowed searches to be constrained in a way that is impossible using any of the current search functions. Using search syntax such as "to:SarahW" or "by:tinfoilcase" now only results in an error message.

Please also put a toggle in the self-search that allows a user to select which messages are seen. ("by", "to", "all")

I am certain that John Robinson is working on it, although as we discussed earlier, I personally have not been able to use the "To: another screeen name" search for about six months - ever since the introduction of the MEGA-ping lists that send messages "to:" a LOT of FReepers - so I guess that it may be a lower priority for him.

MORE good news about the "Find in Forum" box at the top of each Latest Posts page:

It will now let you search articles by KEYWORD!!!

This is a HUGE improvement, particularly once we have the ability to ADD keywords to articles.

Keyword, yes that's a good thing. The "to:" search was only available in the quick-search box (the little search box that was placed where "find-in-forum" is placed now)

I hardly ever used the search button (aka "experimental search engine) because it took longer to click on the button, leave the profile page, get to search form, fill in the form, and run the search than it did to simply type "by:freepername" or "to:freepername in the quick search.

(Not to mention, the search form had no way to find messages *to* any given freeper.)

The "to:freepername" search was fully functional up until Saturday. Only you have to enter the special syntax in the quick search box.

I was very relieved when the "experimental search engine" was finally implemented, to find that I didn't have to use it. The quick search still had full utility.
