how can one get rid of that forum thing at the top? Its irritating to read bits and pieces of conversations.

Click "My Locale", click your state, and you will see that option near the top/middle left.

Click on the flag, then tell it you do not want to be notified of new messages. This probably should be made the default.

You can also go to My Preferences and set up how you want to see lists.
