"But the terrorists, the Stalins, the Husseins, the Hitlers, the bin Ladens, the Arafats,
the Hitlery Clintons - make this peaceful life impossible."
You left one out - the most dangerous terrorist in America today.

Say, where is my mule anyway?"

The politically correct sculpture of the NYC firemen at the WTC would fit right in on this thread.
Could someone post it?

A spade -- the soldier's friend
Not a sargent. Not a dog. Not even a rifle. A spade. A verse from Mayakovsky comes to mind, who glorified the new Soviet Man thus:
If nails were made out of these men
They would be the best nails in the world.

Yeah. Get a look at the cheery painting behind gramps and the boy. Peasants trudging along in a death march.

A spade....all the better to bury his comrades after G.I. Joe puts a bullet in his head.
Seriously, thanks for all your translation work. I visited Russia for two weeks two years ago and was fascinated by the culture and the way the country is dealing with its new-found freedom.

Peasants trudging along in a death march That is a part of the message. The picture is a well-known painitng by I believe, Repin, and it depicts the "burlaks", -- laborers that would drag a boat upstream on a river. That had been an instantly recognizable icon of Russia's backwardness. The creator of the poster uses it effectively as the grampa points to the same river teaming with modern ships. The text says, "The dreams of the people have now come true".

Ever see the cartoons Dr Seuss did for PM magazine during WWII? He was quite the fan of Stalin.

The large lettering in the upper left asks, "To whom does the national income go?" The legend in the upper right corner says, "In the USSR--to the workers." Behind the worker the buildings are labeled "University," "Palace of Culture" and "Cinema." The smaller legend reads: "In 1950 the national income was more than 60% higher than before the war."
The legend on the right says, "In the capitalist countries, the lion's share--to the exploiters."

From the first decrees of October to the prosperity of socialist agriculture. Izvestia (News) Newspaper says "Land Decree"
Tragic.

Gorbachev
To: Spell Correctly
That should be "Spell correctly." because you should spell the second word with a lower case letter, since it is more of a sentence or command than a name.
Use proper GRAMMAR!!!!
I am an older lady, as in way over 50, college computer teacher, three college degrees, and a Freeper since Feb. 1998. I don't like young whipper shappers who are rude.
You are a NEWBIE!!!!

The slogan in Russian quotes Stalin: "The peoples of the world do not wish for a repetition of the calamity of war." The rifle is labeled "North Atlantic Pact."

Take your pick, dear friend!!!
BTW -- don't you agree that rude NEWBIES are just precious???? This NEW greenhorn doesn't like it if a Freeper makes a TYPO, he calls it a misspelled word... sheesh!!!!
Especially when you and I are trying to speak, read, write, and spell in several languages. Recently had to learn Portugese. That one was ROUGH! Had 2 1/2 weeks to learn it. My niece had to learn German last year, in six weeks!
