GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - President Bush signed landmark campaign finance legislation Wednesday and the National Rifle Association swiftly filed suit challenging the constitutionality of the new law.
Bush signed the measure in the Oval Office — without the public signing ceremony often staged for major legislation. In a written statement, he said that while the bill has flaws, it "improves the current system of financing for federal campaigns."
Bush then embarked on a two-day swing to South Carolina and Georgia, where he planned to raise more than $3 million for GOP candidates for Congress.
Critics have long argued the legislation violates the Constitution, and the NRA was the first in line to file its challenge at the federal courthouse a few blocks from the White House. The legislation "eviscerates the core protections of the First Amendment by prohibiting, on pain on criminal punishment, political speech," said a legal complaint filed on behalf of the NRA and its political victory fund.
Bush just drove a stake through Feinstein's heart! This is a glorious day and the NRA should be celebrating and... What?... Oh... Never mind.
On a more serious note, what happens if a conservative Supreme Court Justice gets seriously injured in an auto accident and lies comatose while a 4-4 Supreme Court decision allows the First Amendment of the Constitution to go the way of the Second?
What is to stop the brainless ones in Congress from becoming even more creative in their unlawful re-write of the Bill of Rights? Is there an infringement of my rights which is severe enough for Bush to veto? Or must we tolerate even more?
The principle which requires Bush and the rest of Congress to obey the oath they have taken is a principle for which one should be willing to fight, willing to die, and willing to veto.
I agree there. We COULD if we are lucky get the primary tri-fecta if all goes right and send 3 ASD'ers home. MCRGO is going to get involved with Dingell on this. I know that for a fact.
Dingell is our top priority(I'm talking strictly gun rights) in this primary on fed offices. Dingell is favored, especially with Monroe County(blue dogs), but it is not a gimme by any stretch of the imagination since much of his old downriver base was swallowed up by the Detroit districts. Rivers has her Ann Arbor district mostly in tact. AGE is the scary issue here.
Two other ones. Incumbent Fred Upton vs State Senator Dale Shugars. Shugars is term limited and decided to take on liberal GOP'er Upton. We could win this one with a good turnout.
Dem incumbents Jim Barcia vs Dale Kildee. This will be the toughest. Kildee has Flint. Barcia is from Bay City and loses most of his district. Both are union dems, but Kildee is more well known. Kildee is STAUNCH ASD, and Barcia is STAUNCH Pro-2a. Ironically, both are pro-life dems.
Really? Why don't we just have Bush sign it. Then the NRA will immediately file suit for a hearing before the Supreme Court and they will find that it is unConstitutional. If this is supposed to work for CFR then why not for the unConstitutional infringement of the right to keep and bear arms?
I never let my children play in traffic no matter how good a lesson it might have taught them. I had an obligation to preserve, protect, and defend them from harm.
Is everyone expecting a unanimous Supreme Court Decision? If it is only 5-4, won't the McCainiacs be right back at it, expecting Bush to sign again? Can they make the case that ten days of infringement would be allowed even though 60 days is too many. How about 25 days, then?
I do not expect the media to agree with a Supreme Court decision stating that the media does not deserve a monopoly on what opinions may be broadcast. The media is a scorpion and I deserve what I get when it bites me.
They are blind hogs, but they got an acorn with that play. Now, we need to get numbers there, and that means cutting Bush a little slack for now. Wellstone, Carnahan, and Johnson should be toast. It'll take more effort, but we should be able to get Harkin and Cleland, too. If Baucas, Ben Nelson, and Zell Miller don't go wobbly in the Senate, we may be able to filibuster any renewal in the Senate, while we play the June `99 game in the House.
That will neutralize the issue, and we either emasculate the bill (getting an improvement would be acceptable to me at this point), or the thing sunsets. Either way, we win, but we'd need to get some serious work in 2004 to keep good people in there, because President Hillary Clinton would push for and sign something a LOT worse.
As for the semi-auto provison, that one can be handled with a different strategy. Unlike some of the Buchananbots here, I adjust tactics and strategy to fit the political terrain as opposed to going for the political equivalent of Pickett's Charge.
Guess he just got a full body transplant. Maybe we need to do and exorcism to really purge the white House of it's nefarious occupants.
It also means no truthful, critical and informative TV commercials for 60 days prior to the election. This is why it is wrong.
And every other person running for office in FL who got fewer votes than their opponent lost that day. Bush should be glad he didn't lose by a million votes? Why should he have great affection for conservatives? According to Rove, millions of them stayed home on Election Day.

Will I vote for conservatives next election, you betcha....Will I be a registered Republican next election, no way in hell, no more activism for the Party and no more money...I will be an Independent. I cant in good faith be a member of a Party whose leader signs bills that lead to a degraded Party and props up liberal ideas from a stronger media.

Pretty much my sentiments too............
Don't know that I'll re-register though.....I'd like to make a statement, but I just don't think they care what I like, or dislike. And would never know or care that I left the party. Lastly I want to still vote in the primaries.....So, I feel stuck.

I cant believe that Bush is just wily nily voting for crap like this and making a joke about dotting the W. in his name LOL. Funny George, cant wait for the RNC, Sen Comm., blah blah blah about 5-6 groups I contribute to every year and my State Party.
So Sorry, Why Mr. Miller? W. and tell him I dotted the W also.
