Bush signs Campaign Reform, NRA Sues

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - President Bush signed landmark campaign finance legislation Wednesday and the National Rifle Association swiftly filed suit challenging the constitutionality of the new law.

Bush signed the measure in the Oval Office — without the public signing ceremony often staged for major legislation. In a written statement, he said that while the bill has flaws, it "improves the current system of financing for federal campaigns."

Bush then embarked on a two-day swing to South Carolina and Georgia, where he planned to raise more than $3 million for GOP candidates for Congress.

Critics have long argued the legislation violates the Constitution, and the NRA was the first in line to file its challenge at the federal courthouse a few blocks from the White House. The legislation "eviscerates the core protections of the First Amendment by prohibiting, on pain on criminal punishment, political speech," said a legal complaint filed on behalf of the NRA and its political victory fund.

Can you vote, if you are in jail? I don't think so.

Are the Gulags near or far?

...McCain is libel to be so pissed at them that he won't support W's nominations because of it.

I agree. I already count him as a Dem.

Doesn't it make you slightly uneasy that your post #97 is built on fiction? You have no way of knowing that. You are guessing. I am not saying it isn't a logical guess, but it has about as much hard fact backing it up as the accusation that Corporations are purchasing legislation. Ziltch!

If the primaries were not cooked, GWB had no chance. The whole McCain thing was to make GWB look conservative. I am not sure who would have won, but not someone who lied about reading James Byrnes' biography.

"The liberal controled courts will quickly throw this out"

Not a chance, this will be before the supreme court before the end of the year.

I said who "would" put me in jail, not who "has" put me in jail.

Bush seems to be hung up on the exposure of contributions issue.
He really thinks this is a huge weapon against the left. He keeps saying it and saying it.
Where does the left get their money?
Their base is suppose to be "the poor, the homeless, the little people, the single parent, the lost children."
Where do they got their millions??? Hmmmmm????

But they can't respond to the question of how, precisely, this will help the conservative cause.

Hard money is increased from $1,000 to $2,000 per donor, per candidate.

The GOP has TWICE as many hard money donors as the Democrats.

Oh, I see, even if a law violates the constitution is OK because it provides a political advantage.

PS>>>>>

Where do they got their millions??? Hmmmmm????

Tax exempt organizations could lose their tax fee status if they admit to Democrat donations. Hmmmmmm.

He hasn't articulated his thoughts on the subject, other than "I find some parts a bit troubling, but overall it's good." Click here to read Senator Mitch McConnell's analysis, delivered on the Senate floor.

Great.

The bill is signed behind closed doors and now the President's legal representative will be opposing the NRA in court.

I guess this counts as the President's one free grope of the First Amendment.

CFR is going to be struck down by the court and due to the expedition clause in the bill, it may even happen before November.

I agree that this is Dubya's political goal. I think he's especially concerned about appearing reasonable and agreeable before November, trying to highlight the Dims as confrontational and mean-spirited, which polling shows the voting public hates. He knows his legislation and appointees are DOA unless we win back the Senate.
