Were there any good outfits? (I'm a male who tuned in very late, not exactly an expert.)
Nothing exquisite, unfortunately. But Helen Hunt's hair was gorgeous.
It just looked like no one really had time to get it all together.
My husBen, who's also a man, had to withstand all my catty comments. He is now, grudgingly, a pseudo-expert. By the time J. Lo came on he said, "Well, looks like she forgot to use any hairspray."
Poor guy.

Let me guess, the operational definition of racism precludes blacks from ever being racist and condemns whites as being inherently racist no matter what each group does.Yes, but there's more to it than that. It just recognizes that racism affects Blacks generally in different ways than it does Whites generally.
Also, you shouldn't confuse racism with prejudice, which is something anyone can be and act upon.

for what now?

Nice homepage.

Too bad you think that criticizing racist patronizing at the Oscars is "hatin' nite on Free Republic".Let me see- if a Black person wins it's "racist patronizing," no matter how talented that person is. Now that's racist patronizing.

He should know better than to cause trouble on a protected thread. The Abuse button was probably smoking when they got done with him.
To: rbmillerjr, eddie willers
based on what you are saying...it would be fair for me to say that all you have accomplished has been due to you being a preferenced minority. Is that really the chip you want to bear?No it wouldn't be fair or accurate for you to say that and besides, I don't think that's what eddie willers meant.
To: mafree
the op def of racism precludes any minority from being racist, it is a limited version that college students learn in their history of race texts in college...or as in Mafree's case that her parents taught her from the race texts in college. It is pure double speak. I keep my history of race text in my library as a conversation piece. It's convenient for minorities. Only majority populaions are capable of racism or racist acts or prejudice.
Of course 35 years fron now when whites are no longer the majority population, this will have to be adjusted to yet another "operational definition" of racist, prejudice etc lol, sad but true.
To: mafree
Nope, when blacks or whites object to interracial marriage and mixed race children - then they are racist. Ir's an equal opportunity vice.

Exaclty. What was he thinking attacking a thread that should have been on the stupid forum.
Oh wait. He did start it on the stupid forum.

Exactly, I don't understand why some people are getting upset about this, the Oscars have always been about politics and popularity. I am happy for Halle and Denzel, but I would have just as happy if Nicole and Russell had won; I like all four actors, as well the other nominees. These awards are not worth getting upset about. You are right- Halle and Denzel winning the Oscars doesn't do away with the fact that I gotta get up and go to work in the morning. With that, goodnight to all and I'll be back on this thread tomorrow.
To: mafree
I was reading the replies on this thread and was curious why the uproar over Halle's acceptance speech. I went to oscar.com and read her speech and am even more puzzled than before. I could find nothing inappropriate with the following:Oh, my god. Oh, my god. I'm sorry. This moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women who stand behind me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox and it's for every nameless faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened. Thank you. I'm so honored. I'm so honored and I thank the Academy for choosing me to be the vessel for which His blessing may flow.

If Mafree's a conservative, I'm a giraffe.

I was, personally (as you could probably tell) getting fed up with Dec31, 1999's repeated 9/11 postings...

No it wouldn't be fair or accurate for you to say that and besides, I don't think that's what eddie willers meant.
Actually, that is my quote and it is reference to all of your posts, nobody else is referenced. It means that your view on race is one which perpetuates the belief that blacks can only accomplish or succees with help - due to their being oppressed. If one holds the views that you have stated - would it not follow that we can assume that you have accomplished all you have accomplished due to racial preferences, race based scholarships, and race based admissions?
