So this hurt is not directed at someone else and it is not an agression but rather self-mortification like it happens in Catholic countries when people try emulate holy martyrs or suffering of Christ.'
Paradoxically Shiite Muslims are closer to the Western Christian concepts of self-restrain and long suffereing. They are also closer in the more developed intelectual tradition including scholarship and assimilating elements of Greek philosophy. Study more before you make a judgment on this particular topic.
